USB stick compatibility

I've been using the SanDisk Cruzer USB stick that shipped with my Sport SX since it was delivered to me almost 3 years ago, to do software updates. I've at times tried all of the other dozen or so USB sticks I own to do the updates, but my EFIS never recognized any of them- luckily the SanDisk stick always worked.

Now it's not recognizing the Cruzer USB stick either- I tried doing the latest (9d) update along with the latest navigation database. I waited a good 10 minutes for the EFIS to recognize the memory stick. Until this time it recognized the memory stick in seconds. Does it matter that this time I downloaded the updates via my Mac, rather than a Windows box? I wondered about that, deleted everything and took the memory stick to work where I downloaded the files via my Windows 7 machine. Still no luck.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I had this happen to as well.
There must be something on the stick which Apple places there.

Updating this for others' benefit...

I received an email from Jeff DeFouw a couple of days ago regarding this issue.

Per Jeff:
While the WS and HS models were very picky about USB sticks, the Sport SX units only have one requirement. As long as the stick is USB 2.0 High Speed, it should work. All of the Cruzer ones have worked well. If your SX won't recognize a Cruzer, the USB interface on the main processor probably failed. We've seen many of them fail on one batch of processors. We have to replace the main processor board with a new one to fix it.
Last night I tried a brand new Cruzer USB stick, one that had shipped recently with a friend's Sport SX, loaded with the latest files off GRT's support page. Once again my SX didn't see it, so my conclusion is that the processor is bad as Jeff described. Going back to GRT next week.

Oh yeah, I should add that I downloaded the files to the new Cruzer stick using a PC, not a Mac, to eliminate that variable. There may be issues with file downloads from a Mac, but that's not the problem in this case.

I have always used a Mac to load the data files onto a stick for my HS and HX. No issues so far.

Update: I bought a few Cruzer USB's this week. Downloaded the NAV database to one on my iMac, then updated my SX's.
No problema. Threw away the bad stick.
Please disregard my previous post.
(BTW: I now also have a dedicated stick for each SX which I keep the settings backed up on. Great idea, and EZ to do.)

Put the stick in your pc and erase all the contents. Download your update saved to your stick NOT in a folder. Then it will update your efis. :)
