SAP Question

I am a little reluctant to ask this question since I know the answer must be simple. When I enter an airport into the flight plan, I seem to get the SAP HITS even when I don't want it. If I go to the SAP label and try to select OFF I still cannot seem to turn it OFF. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Does the SAP button show something else besides OFF is selected? There is no feature that would automatically turn it on. If you are seeing the boxes, you may have Enroute HITS turned on in SET MENU, Primary Flight Display. Enroute HITS will show boxes between every waypoint, independent of SAP mode. SAP mode only shows boxes down to a selected runway along the runway centerline or localizer.

That's it!! Enroute HITS. I knew I would be embarrassed. Thanks Jeff. Sorry to have to ask such questions.

OK. Here is another SAP question: I am flying the Sport EX connected to a TruTrak Vizion autopilot, and I am trying to explore the capabilities. I do not have vertical guidance capability yet, however I am somewhat confused about the notes in the Sport Users Guide concerning capturing the synthetic approach. The note says:

When the airplane reaches a position where
conditions are suitable, the EFIS will automatically
change the Lat A/P mode to “NAV” (if it isn’t already),
and the EFIS Nav mode to “GPS”. The airplane will
smoothly capture the localizer inbound course if the
intercept angle is 45 degrees or less, and the distance
to the runway is 8 nm or greater.

Will this work with my set-up with the external autopilot?

If your autopilot doesn't have ARINC-429 steering control (also known as GPSS or EXT L/S), then the EFIS will send a waypoint and cross-track error to direct the autopilot where it wants to go. The EFIS won't have any control over how the autopilot gets there though. The autopilot will see this as a GPS flight plan change and use its built-in GPS course intercept to get to the waypoint and course. For an autopilot with ARINC-429 lateral steering the EFIS will send roll commands to get on course.
