IFR certification

Post by hhawkins1@att.net »

To GRT- Is the GPS-WAAS option in the Adaptive AHRS certifiable for IFR flight?

If you mean, can you use that gps as the primary navigation source under ifr, the answer is "no".

What exactly does the GPS-WAAS option in the AHRS do- assist in navigation? or what?

Well, you do need a gps to run the moving map. I think the latest air data package may use gps to help smooth things out, although it will reach an attitude solution without gps (GRT-Is that correct?)
To use a gps as primary navigation under ifr, the FAA essentially wants the box to meet the performance specs of TSO 145/146. This is incredibly involved and complicated, e.g., expensive. Just look in the front of a Garmin 430W installation manual to see all the exemptions and "equivalent" rulings Garmin had to get.

Our AHRS has never required GPS data. The GPS doesn't directly talk to the AHRS. It has to go through an EFIS to be used for aiding. We added the GPS option to the new AHRS because there was plenty of room in the box for a modern, state-of-the-art independent GPS receiver that many customers would find useful. Many installations of our systems have a separate GPS box as a backup, so you can save the space and power wiring for that box. It can be used to drive all of the internal GPS functions in an EFIS. It is not designed to meet IFR certification or ADS-B compliance. Our ADS-B compliant GPS will require a separate box for now.
