Trig TX56 and MiniGA?

Post by farmrjohn »

Are the navigation outputs of the Trig TX56 compatible with a MiniGA? If so, can they utilize the serial port combiner and what would the settings be?

Some of the documents say the TX56 can output to a glass panel EFIS/PFD indicator and use the SL30 format but the manuals aren't clear. The Mini-GA can read and display the VOR/ILS CDI, VDI, and VOR bearing from an SL30 serial output. The SL30 serial interface uses 9600 baud so it can go through any of our passthru ports or serial combiners. You would configure the serial port for rate 9600 with input and output of SL30-1. The Mini can't read the newer Garmin GNC255 format but that is on the to-do list.

Thanks Jeff. Just to confirm it is only necessary to use the RS232 input/output from the TX56 and not use any of the nav data input/outputs on the TX56 44 pin connector? Do you know what the setting on the TX56 under paragraph 6.2.7 CDI Type would be? One option is RS232 Serial Interface, i.e. Garmin G3X. It looks like paragraph 6.2.9 allows selecting the TX56 for either the SL30 or Garmin GNC255 so that option would be SL30? And, can the VOR/LOC information be displayed on the Mini? The examples in the Mini manual only show GPS1 and GPS2 as navigation sources, if there is VOR/LOC data available to the Mini will that source then be an option?

SL30-style connections are always serial. The 44-pin connector pins can't connect to the Mini anyway. CDI Type would be SERIAL. The SL30 could also use NONE/INTERNAL as a special case that would use serial and then the panel as a backup, but who knows if that works on this unit. Serial output format has to be SL30 for now because the Mini can't understand GNC255 format. When you configure a serial input for SL30 on the Mini it will add another NAV MODE labelled "NAV". When you select that mode it will use the VOR and ILS navigation from the SL30 input. You also need to configure the "ILS Type" in SET MENU, Primary Flight Display to make the needles/scales deviation indicators on the PFD work.
