I recently updated the EFIS and AHARS data in my HX and WS systems. I did NOT change any of the system settings only the version of the EFIS and AHARS. Do I need to do a backup of the system to save my system settings? I figure since they haven't changed I shouldn't have too BUT I would hate to be wrong. I did that once and it took me days to get things back to the way they were prior to the electrical failure that took the system down.

Settings are always preserved during software upgrades, and old backups will work with new versions. New settings that did not exist in the old version would not be touched if you restored from the old backup.
