7” Sport EX -
EX is for Expandable, Extra Light, and Extra Value…
Starting at only $1500, the Sport EX puts a Primary Flight Display EFIS in your panel at an unbeatable price. Software options let you purchase what you need now, and expand later, without removing the EX from your panel. Built on more than two decades of avionics experience, and using the industry’s only AHRS that can operate unaided, the base model provides primary flight functions and engine pages which can be driven by any GRT EIS engine monitor. The base model even includes synthetic approach to any runway, and depiction of obstacles on the PFD screen.
Base Model Features
Every Sport EX features:

The optional synthetic vision, with its 10 mile range, provides intuitive terrain awareness. This awareness is essential whey flying in mountainous areas, and also creates a natural sense of height above the ground, location, and direction of flight. 3-

Often the days we fly do not require constant monitoring of the airplanes attitude. Airspeed, altimeter, and a map are all we need, with the PFD attitude to back us up if conditions change. We love those days and so does the Sport SX. That is why we allow you to show airspeed and altimeter tapes on your moving map. The Sport SX rounds everything out with wind and destination information.

The greatest value of obstacle alerting occurs when you find yourself forced to fly under an overcast in less than desirable visibility. At times like this, it must be effortless to understand such threats. That is why we show your threats on the PFD and not just the map. We show you the threat in the exact place you will be looking-

Basic or Comprehensive Engine Monitoring
Connecting any GRT EIS to the EX provides you with comprehensive engine monitoring, but you can start simpler with the Basic Engine Monitoring Option. This low-
Connect and EIS for Comprehensive Engine Monitoring
Having produced the EIS engine monitor for over 20 years, we’ve accumulated a great deal of personal and customer engine monitoring experience. From this came such exclusive features as the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) time history. A simple graph of the last two minutes of all EGTs, our engine monitoring system makes it effortless to distinguish between engine problems affecting one cylinder, or the entire engine. This distinction could be essential when making decisions in response to engine problems, especially at critical times such as initial climb out. We find it so useful that we never takeoff without it displayed, and we recommend you don’t either.
CHT time history also proves useful by making the trend obvious. This is especially useful in high-
Finally, we love the specific fuel consumption display. Its measure of engine efficiency that confirms when you have leaned properly, and tells you when you need to lean again.
Dual rotary knobs and 5 lighted softkeys make up the pilot interface. All are high tactile force, which is optimal for operation in turbulence. Pilots upgrading an older Horizon WS screen will find the user-
Touch screen functions will be added over time, but the first release will include at least the following:
Situational Awareness without Synthetic Vision
Deferring synthetic vision does not mean you are sacrificing situational awareness. The Sport SX shows obstacles and runways on the screen as they appear out the window, even without the synthetic vision. The highway-
The Source of the Attitude
The integrity of an EFIS is dependent on the integrity of the attitude data that drives it. GRT Avionics has always lead the way with the only AHRS in the industry that can operate without airspeed or GPS aiding. The same adaptive AHRS that is used in our stand-
The Connectivity You Need
Three serial ports in and out (optional with six), a USB port, and a dedicated magnetometer port, allow for great flexibility within your panel design. An optional ARINC 429 interface can also be added, while still retaining all serial ports, for connectivity with IFR GPS navigators, such as the G430/650/750.
The Sport EX includes autopilot functionality. Just add GRT servos and you are on your way to a fully automated cockpit. Like our GRT EFIS systems, it can also control an external autopilot. Even without servos, all autopilot functions are available to drive the flight director, giving you a single cue to follow, making you the autopilot, and simplifying hand flying while improving accuracy. Read more here.
Already own an autopilot? Just wire it to the Sport EX, and the Sport will couple it to all your navigation sources!
Engine Data with a Bonus
Engine data is provided to the Sport EX via the Engine Information System (EIS). The EIS is a complete instrument with a display and user-

We support that!
We are also kitplane builders, and have always supported the spirit of experimental aircraft by providing the builder with as many options as possible. This is why we provide free software support for the Sport SX for the following equipment:
(If there is a device that you don’t see on this list, and you would like the EX to interface with it, drop us a line! We are always willing to consider new devices, and thanks to the extensive interfacing and powerful processor within the EX, future growth is built-
The Quality you have come to expect from GRT
You would expect the industry’s leading AHRS and the 20+ years of avionics experience to be reflected in the hardware and software design, but what you might not anticipate is the no compromise approach to its mechanical design. The powder-
Easy Upgrade Path from Older Horizon Systems
The Sport EX shares the same wiring as our previous Horizon systems. (Note: Gray Code altitude encoding is not supported by the Sport EX.)
Sport EX Options Selection and Pricing
Order exactly the options you want, or choose a discounted package. The choice is yours, and remember, EX is for expandable...options can be added at any time, and most are just require a software key to activate...you don't even have to remove it from your panel.
Basic Primary Flight Sport EX Package: $1500
Base Model –Connecting power and ground, pitot and static, and you are flying!
The ideal solution for sport airplanes, such as Jabirui, Sonex, Zenith, Just Aircraft, Kitfox, Avid Flyer, and other airplanes that simply can't justify an expensive panel. The base model gives you everything you need to go flying, and installation couldn't be easier. Have, or planning on adding a Grand Rapids Technologies EIS? Graphical engine monitoring pages are built right in, including the highly valuable EGT time history. The included VFR autopilot function allows you to add servos for altitude hold, GPS coupling, and heading/track selector.
Basic Full EFIS Sport EX Package: $1900
Basic Engine Monitoring
Moving Map Option (Includes sensors for tachometer, oil temperature, oil pressure. Also provides flight timer and hourmeter).
Adding the basic engine monitoring option and the moving map option gives you a full EFIS solution at an unbeatable value. Equipped this way, your Sport EX provides primary flight display, engine monitoring, and moving map in rock-
Advanced Sport EX Package: $2400. Save $140 over options purchased separately.
6 Serial Ports
The most popular Sport EX solution, this package combines the features that make VFR or IFR flying comfortable in sport and experimental airplanes. Faster airplanes, and those used for more cross-
Advanced Touch Sport EX Package: $2875. Save $340 over options purchased separately.
All the features in the Advanced Sport EX Package, plus:
IFR Autopilot Functions
Ideal for IFR or VFR, this package includes all the features of the Advanced Sport package, plus the convenience of a touchscreen and an autopilot/flight director with climb/descent and vertical navigation coupling.
Digital Magnetometer – Buy it or share it!
Already have a GRT digital magnetometer? You can share its output with the Sport SX...and best yet, its free.
Adding a digital magnetometer provides more than just heading for your EFIS. It allows your EFIS to calculate wind speed/direction in flight, and provides a yaw reference for the AHRS. This yaw reference means your attitude does not require GPS or airspeed aiding...an industry exclusive that preserves the integrity of your attitude data.
Installation couldn't be easier. The digital magnetometer senses its roll and pitch orientation when you mount it. Two wires plus ground completes the wiring.
