Re: Display Question
Not sure about the Sport HS but the Horizon HS or Hx will show a flight director (FD). Access from the autopilot control page, even if there are no servos. All the guys taking the ATP test ‘cheat’ and use a FD to keep the needles exactly centered.

Re: Display Question
Yes, it should show VLOC data. Some where in the setup menu there is a question that goes something like this,’switch efis mode when 430 is switched from gps to vloc’, or maybe it’s the other way around (I have a 420 so don’t have this problem). Make sure you have the correct setting. Alternatively,...

Re: TRIG TT22 GPS input
Well, since you asked: I faced a similar decision except G420W instead of the 175. I decided to tap into the Garmin rather than buy a Safefly: one less box, one less antenna, saved $500. Getting into the Garmin connector’s backshell was no fun, but doable. Configuring the TT22 from the HX was easy.

Re: Horizon 10.1 install
They’re pretty much duplicates. The efis will flash red to alert you to an issue, pretty hard to miss, so I just hooked up the red warning light to the EIS. I also set different limits, e.g., efis flashes red the cht scale if it exceeds 420 F; EIS turns the red light on if CHT exceeds 430 F. So if t...

Re: secondary power input and auto startup/shutdown
As an old electronics guy, I would recommend not running avionics during engine start, unless you have backup power. Modern electronics are usually very tolerant of over-voltage events, but not necessarily under-voltage events.

Re: secondary power input and auto startup/shutdown
The Hx has multiple power inputs but they are all equal - no primary or secondary. So yes, they all need to be switched off to turn off the unit. OTOH if one power source fails, you don’t have to do anything to keep the second supply on. The Hx takes a couple of minutes to fully boot up. It’s import...

Re: Horizon 10.1 install
I’ll try to answer a bit. First, while most of the GRT equipment has RS232 hardware with in and out pairs, it doesn’t have to be that way. For example, I have an SL30 nav-com. It has an RS232-out port, and I use it to send nav data to my GRT Hx. The SL30 also has a RS232-in port, which I could use t...

Re: Horizon 10.1 install
Glad to see you made it onboard!
Make certain that when you wire up the Garmin gps that you include an extra shielded wire connected to a spare RS232 out port. You’ll need this to go to the TT22 for ADSB-out.

Attn: Jeff
Another GRT user asked about programming his EIS, and I referred him here. But he couldn’t figure out how to get a log-in password - and neither can I! Any advice? Specifically, he couldn’t see what to enter in response to ‘I am not a robot’.

Re: Garmin GDL-39 & Garmin 796 to HXR
I can vouch for the Skyradar D2 (USB into an Hx). Works fine. I think you can find them used for $500 or less. That includes a gps source that the Hx can read and use. Also sends out WiFi to an iPad running WingX.
