LPV/ILS checklists

Post by Flyfisher13 »

Please review with comment the following checklist for LPV and ILS approaches. These have been borrowed from others. If there was a better way to post them let me know. Thanks

ILS APPROACH WITH GRT EFIS/430

• Assure destination airport in direct to in the 430W
• Verify GRT NAV to 430W
• Verify 430W is GPS or VLOC
• Loaded and activated ILS approach in the 430W (vectors to final if sure of getting vectors otherwise choose a fix –can always reselect Vectors to Final)
• Set LOC Freq
• Set DA and Missed Approach Altitudes
• Set SL30 with second VOR to see cross radials
• Set GRT LAT A/P in HDG mode if on Vectors
• ARM ILS in GRT when told to intercept LOC and set/verify inbound course on GRT (prompted)
• When LOC captured and on inbound course the LAT A/P automatically changes from HDG to ENAV, captures GS and starts down. Set Missed Approach Nav mode desired- GNAV or HDG-will be in parenthesis.
• Establish stabilized approach and flap settings
• Once at appropriate altitude and or location on Missed procedure press OBS (cancels SUSP) and GRT LAT A/P will switch to preset NAV Mode. If GNAV, the plane will finish climbing to the altitude set and fly to the missed approach point as published and fly the hold without further action. You can then reactivate the approach and do it again. If HDG then you are set to fly vectors if instructed by ATC for the Missed Approach.
• At DA and “miss” Push MISSED soft key (Auto change to HDG with present course and 500 fpm climb or GNAV will fly full published missed approach)
• Once at appropriate altitude and or location on Missed procedure press OBS (cancels SUSP) and set GRT LAT A/P to GNAV. The plane will finish climbing to the altitude set and fly to the missed approach point as published and fly the hold without further action. You can then reactivate the approach and do it again.
Note: If it says SUSP above the OBS button it means that automatic waypoint sequencing has been suspended and pressing the button will cancel out of the SUSP state and return to normal waypoint sequencing. If you press the OBS button before you see SUSP you are telling the unit to do something else entirely. Refer to pgs 5 & 18 in the GNS 430W Quick Reference Guide. ALSO if you go missed before reaching the MAP keep flying straight until you do cross the MAP to assure terrain/obstacle clearance.

LPV APPROACH WITH GRT EFIS/430

• Assure destination airport in “direct to” in the 430W
• Verify GRT NAV to 430W
• Verify 430W is GPS
• Loaded and activated approach in the 430W (vectors to final if sure of getting vectors otherwise choose a fix –can always reselect Vectors to Final)
• Set DA and Missed Approach Altitudes
• Set SL30 with second VOR to see cross radials if available
• Set GRT LAT A/P in HDG mode if on Vectors- if flying transition set to GNAV and arm the EFIS GPSV (will not fly GS if GPSV not armed)
• ARM GNAV in GRT when told to intercept inbound course on GRT if on vectors
• When captured and on inbound course verify LPV and not degraded to LNAV (see Note 1). Set Missed Approach Nav mode desired- GNAV or HDG-will be in parenthesis.
• Establish stabilized approach and flap settings
• At DA and “miss” Push MISSED soft key (Auto change to HDG with present course and 500 fpm climb)
• Once at appropriate altitude and or location on Missed procedure press OBS (cancels SUSP. See Note 2) and GRT LAT A/P will switch to preset NAV Mode. If GNAV, the plane will finish climbing to the altitude set and fly to the missed approach point as published and fly the hold without further action. You can then reactivate the approach and do it again. If HDG then you are set to fly vectors if instructed by ATC for the Missed Approach.
Note 1: Integrity monitoring (RAIM) will monitor satellite conditions and alert the pilot using an ‘INTEG’ or ‘WARN’ annunciation at the bottom left corner of the display if protection limits cannot be maintained. If this occurs, the GPS receiver should not be used for primary navigation guidance. Revert to an alternate navigation source, or select an alternate destination airport
Note 2: If it says SUSP above the OBS button it means that automatic waypoint sequencing has been suspended and pressing the button will cancel out of the SUSP state and return to normal waypoint sequencing. If you press the OBS button before you see SUSP you are telling the unit to do something else entirely. Refer to pgs 5 & 18 in the GNS 430W Quick Reference Guide. ALSO, if you go missed before reaching the MAP, keep flying straight until you do cross the MAP to assure terrain/obstacle clearance.

Comments:
On ils checklist points 12 and 14 are the same. 14 is the correct sequence, delete 12
Destination airport has to be in the active flight plan, you do not need to use "direct to" (but that works, too).
Press grt Missed button anytime at OR BEFORE the MAP. If pressed before you will continue inbound but start to climb. Since you do not have autothrottles, do you want to add "add power" to your checklist? Or "reduce power" at GS intercept?
Since I have a 420, not a 430, I do not know the answer to this: transitioning from VLOC on the approach to GPS guidance for the miss, will the GRT automatically change VLOC to GPS or do you need to push that button? I recall there are some setup options for what controls what but I forget what they are. If the answer is no, then add 'change VLOC to GPS" to your checklist.
BTW, the decision altitude bug (reminder only, it does not initiate the miss) and the missed approach altitude can be entered at any time. I'd suggest doing it while enroute, before things get busy.
