Greetings... I'm starting to hack together an altitude holding system as per subject line.
I'm thinking that I can use an arduino to receive serial input from either the EIS serial out or the Sport Tx out, and write the code that will send appropriate voltages to my Ray Allen trim servo, based on changes in altitude. Just wondering if anyone has done something similar. It seems as though it would be doable...

Catching the altitude bytes from the serial stream might be the most challenging aspect.

The Sport SX has well known altitude outputs including basic serial altitude encoders and Fuel/Air Data messages. The Fuel/Air Data messages include altitude, vertical speed, airspeed, heading, and more, at two updates per second. The Fuel/Air Data formats are called the Shadin Z and S formats and are documented in some avionics manuals.

If your EIS has its own altimeter option installed, then the EIS serial stream format is available by e-mail.
