Can a simple linear pot be used as a sensor for flap or trim position? If so what is the recommended value? I understand that the HX unit has a pull up that can be turned on so no voltage needs to be applied to the sensor device.

The simple answer is yes. The linear variable resistor units from Ray Allen work well, no external bias needed. I think they are a few Kohms max.

Does anyone know the resistance value of these pots?

Ray Allen units are 0 to 5 K.
