V 7 ... audio alerts ...

Postby n468ac » Tue Mar 31, 2015 2:19 pm

For those that don't like the stock voice alerts go to http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php ... you can pick your own voice and wording. Just save the downloaded file as the same name as stock. Lauren, is my fav ... her voice comes across very clear with all the back ground aircraft noise.

FYI ... WAY TO GO GRT ON THIS UPDATE!!!!!

Can you please add a bit of details as how to get the alert setup and working. I saw little instructions on their site, only that it needs to be copied in a directory named alert. I am not sure if the USB will need to remain in place or if it would copy it from that directory. Also any settings need to be change in the setup page?

Thanks in advance

Place the ALERT folder on the root of the USB drive ... Copy the alerts into the system using the SET MENU, General Setup, Audio, Copy Alerts function, it will copy the files from the USB to the HX. I do leave the USB in all the time, as it has my approach plates on there, but I don't think you have to. If it doesn't find the audio files, you will see an error on the bottom of the screen after it tries to load them. You can adjust the volume for the BEEP and VOICE within that page to. FYI if you keep trying to adjust the volume the system will keep playing the BEEP sound, followed by the voice, allowing you to adjust your intercom to the correct audio level. I found doing that on the ground was the easiest way to get the audio level setup.

Thanks for the info, I will give this a shot but I also have to add wiring for the audio alerts which if I am correct, it is pin B24. Do you know what alerts do we get, is it only those alerts that are visual and need to be acknowledged or is it more customizable? And if that is the case, would it keep repeating itself until the alert has been acknowledged?

I would like to get audio alert for speed and possibly for the AoA if that is possible.

Thanks

Most alerts play only once when the condition is first met. There's a warning tone, a caution tone, and an advisory/chime tone. Most alarms are just the chime. A handful of special alerts are not related to alarms. AoA has a repeating tone that repeats faster the closer you are to stall. Custom voice alerts can be added to any alarm that has an alarm identifier, but those haven't been documented yet. The only speed alert is for exceeding Vne.

Here's the list of special alerts:
Min Oil Pressure
Min Fuel Pressure
AoA tone near stall, repeats more frequently closer to stall
Obstacle alarm
New traffic within alert criteria
Autopilot Disconnect
Max Oil Temperature
Max CHT
Low/High Voltage
Max Fuel Flow
Vne Exceeded
Trim alert (from GRT pitch servo) repeats every 30 seconds
SAP height above runway at 500, 200, and 100 feet
Minimums if decision altitude is set
Approaching minimums when 200 feet above decision altitude
Waypoint sequence

Jeff,

When when these additional alerts be documented? I thought I'd heard that Sandy had recorded alarm conditions at one point... wonder why we got Joshua from WarGames...

Jeff - Is there a size limit for the wav files? I got the alerts.zip from the website to work, but I didn't like the mechanical voice, so I created my own, but when loaded I only get the tones, now wav files. I'm guessing their too big, but maybe there's something else.

Sandy created a few samples a long time ago for testing, before we designed the latest audio alerts function. They didn't have everything we need. We were going to have someone else record new ones, but just haven't got around to it yet. I'll have to bring it up again.

The system will only copy at most 100 MB of wav files internally. It would complain if you tried to copy too much. It will play any file that fits in memory, which is many megabytes, but the files are always played to completion so you don't want them to be too long. It tries to use built-in format conversion to handle different bit lengths and rates, but maybe you created one it doesn't handle. The ones we currently provide are 16-bit 22050 Hz mono uncompressed, with no special extensions or metadata included in the file.

Thanks for the reply, mine are only 7MB total, so that's not the issue. I do think they were stereo, I'll play with it.

I have gotten mine working. I changed them from Stereo to mono, and 32 bit to 16 bit, which seems to have resolved my issue.

Interestingly, it seems that the system may read the USB drive even after copying the wav files to the DU. I didn't prove that to myself, but I did see the odd behavior, the "GRT" voices recur after I'd copied my new "more human" voices to the unit, and I think that is because my "plates" USB had the GRT Alerts folder. After I replaced the voices there I got my nicer audio alerts.
